After making the decision to pursue a career in teaching I researched the options available to me. I applied for a place on a typical university based PGCE course and then I came across a SCITT training course with Altius. I quickly realised that this SCITT offered the perfect balance of education with the benefit of school based practical experience. I am also local to the area, so I was aware of the outstanding reputations of the schools within Altius.
My initial interview took place at Gorsey Bank Primary School, one of the schools within the alliance, and I was extremely impressed by the ethos and commitment of the individuals, school and of the course. Everyone was incredibly welcoming and willing to answer any questions that I had; I felt like they wanted to get to know me. I instantly knew that this was the right place for me.
I was part of a primary SCITT consisting of 13 associate teachers, therefore smaller than a typical university programme, which enabled us all to get to know each other and feel fully supported throughout our journey. We attended weekly subject specific training days delivered by practising subject experts which enhanced our knowledge and allowed us to apply this within the classroom.
During each placement, I felt like I was a member of the team and was treated as one of the teachers from day one. My mentors continuously went above and beyond to both help and support me at every stage. They provided effective feedback which helped ensure I was constantly reflecting on and evaluating my practice in order to progress on a day to day basis. I feel privileged to have had the opportunity to work with each and every one of them.
When a position as a class teacher arose at Cheadle Hulme Primary school, I jumped at the opportunity to apply to one of the schools within the Laurus Trust. I was fortunate enough to be given the opportunity to become part of a brand new and ever growing school. I am delighted to be part of this once-in-a- lifetime opportunity to grow and develop with a school that provides the children with a love of learning.
